The Samsung YP-U3 ($89.99) is another compact 2GB player with a similar feature set to the ZEN Stone Plus, including a one-inch single-colour display FM radio, voice recorder, and support for WMA and MP3 files. The YP=U3 offers about 15 hours of audio playback on a single charge. The YP-U3 incorporates touch-sensitive controls which help maintain a flat design aesthetic. The YP-U3 doesn't require an A/C adaptor owing to the fact that it doubles as a USB key. Simply press a button on the player and a USB plug will slide out of one end, allowing you to plug it directly into a USB port on your PC to transfer files and charge the battery. The YP-U3 comes with a belt clip and is offered in black, white, green, pink and light blue.

The Samsung YP-K5 is much thicker thicker than the average audio player (3.36 cm to be exact), but there's a very good reason. The back of the player actually slides out and flips up to reveal a speaker so that you can share the music on the player with people around you. When the speaker is closed, the YP-K5 functions as a traditional audio player listed to through headphones. The YP-K5 supports MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG audio formats, and you can also view JPEG photos on its 1.9-inch colour OLED screen (the photos are a bit grainy, however). There's also an FM radio and alarm clock. The speaker is powerful enough to fill a fair-sized room - we cranked the volume up as high as it would go and noticed no distortion. Samsung advertises about 20 hours of battery life for the YP-K5. The player is one of the only non-Apple products to be compatible with Mac as well as Windows - and Linux fans will be pleased to hear that it's compatible with that operating system as well. The 2GB model is $119.99 and comes in black, red or green, and the 4GB model costs $149.99 and comes only in black.Compatible accessories: Our top picks protective cases for the YP-K5 are the black leather Belkin Convertible Folio ($29.99), or the sportier Caribiner Case ($29.99) with a clip that allows you to attach it to a belt or bag.
